the Wang-san International art & culture festival had occured several years before.
year by year, getting more international,in this year, artists from France,Singapore, and Japan have joined with Korean artists.
this festival has two dimentional scenes, one is the art camp, and the other is the art festival.B
the Impressions of Wang-san
reported by Cab
- : the place'Wang-san art laboratory' which used be an abandaned school building,
located on the mountainous side of Kan-nun city.(it took half an hour from the center of the city by car.)
it looked like Nagano, or Hokkaido prefecture of Japan, and had a lot of natural and greenery atmosphere.

this year's art camp had started on 18th September,
and each artists took a look around this natural scenary, talked with others, used this atmosphere with others, at first. and then started their works trying to combining with their way of making and this atmophere.
our host family also was so nice, we got a lot of marvellous experiences, especially the Korean national holiday sceremony. it looked like our japanese new year's day, or thanks given's day.(at the ceremony, we tried to mimic their moving eagarly. it was really wonderful experience!)

everyday, Professor Chei fetched us by car from our host family's house to the Art center,
and beyond the road infront of this art center, there was the country house we called 'the restaurant' where we had our every meals, of course Korean food! we sat in front of a round table togather, and were served red dishes( many kinds of Kimuchi!) and white ones which looked very traditional or very country style. so delicious so that every time, i had eaten too much!
then, except supper times, we could work for our creatings.
sometimes, people coming to this art center, waiked around, and took a look our works, talked with us very friendly with their curiousity.
as for us, we felt this place was an ideal place to think and work for our creativities, indeed.
after dinner time, almost everyday, many famous artists, curators and professors were coming to the art center, and gave a kind of presentations for introducing their works so far, or thieir opinions for the art up to date.
and moreover, each of us who joined this art camp had our presentations for everybody.
sometimes very strong discussions occured. because of our differances between our opinions.
which would have come from differances of our back-bones, nationalities, unconsuciousness, senses, so on.
which made us so surprised, at the same time, so interesting and stimulus, it was really nice, impulsive experiences
- :
mathmedias like TV/news papers in this area
this art camp/festivel was a very big event for Kangnun Si.
so sometimes we got interviews from some broadcasting, or newspapers.
i felt this was owing to the resulting action of Professor Chei & professor Paku's continuas efforts for energizing art actions in the city.
- :
the joint artists' works' impressions to me
this time we had less than 2 weeks for making our works,
we were able to enjoy staying and thinking our creativities deeply with this environment, atmosphere, surroundings and materials by each own.

Andree Weschler/France
Ka-inn Chua/Singapole

Andree had the strong theme 'Women's sexiority / body' with every her works so far.
this time not only field work, she had made the video for the coraborative performance with the Japanese artists for the Art festival.
(she is going to have a solo exhibition in Pepper's Gallery, 7-12th Jan.2002.
and you can see this performance on 12th Jan. it would be developed more at that time!
the field work was also the collaboration with Kainn who is an artist from Singapore.
the space of the Earth made by dried red stems which were abandaned since this year's harvest. i felt some senses of atmosphere of warmth of human's existence floating into the heaven.

Bum Joon Lee/Korea
he used to study the Animal philosophy in Australia,
when he was over 30 years-old, he started to work as an artist.
i've got the impression
that he always try to make his works about his soul and mind deeply from his works and presentation.

Ha Lim Kim/Korea
she piled stones up at a riverbed, shaped as cones and put some miniature horses made by FRP. it was so amaging when she put the horses around cones, that work's scale sense was so changed.

Mi Kyung Oh/Korea
she tried to make a line which made by colored pebbles from the entrance of a road to a shed beyond the opposit side of the river. the part of the line between the river,
which made colored by textile, was desappered, because of the heavy rain in the day before!!! (that kind of happening was funny as making works outside.)
i really liked the line as if it was a free hand drawing !

Ri A Yoo/Korea
she made a long line with dried stems abandaned on a field after harvest.
as it nearly finished, we could become recognising the shape of the Earth's gradually.

Yann Vero/France
his work was as his staying in the bush there,
he made some roads, built a tent, and slept there.
along the road some news' photos of President Bush,
i felt his work was so conceptual, though, he insisted it had no concept!
we had his presentation in there at one night, and listened his remixing cd contained of some voice & sounds which were collected over the world by him.
i felt my spiritual senses were getting enlarged with his sound remix work. the visions come from his work and my subconscious visions crossed and mixed. time and space senses were changing in my mind. it was really wonderful experience for me.
his approaching for his art work looked so peculier that i felt so exciting and fresh.

Jea Wook Lee/Korea
there was a man standing on the tree!
his work was so tricky because of the unusual atmosphere of human's existence!

Kum Hwa Choi/Korea
i felt her work had senses of warmth and massive, even
she changed her materials from stone to straw.
maybe owing to that she had been staying in Italy and worked with stone for 12years.

Zhenhua Sun/China
Zhangshu Guo/China
Zhang Feng/China

they had been making a big fisher man putting on the river.

Kwang Bin Lee/Korea
he had come there calmly and also made his work so quietly.
his work looked so calmly like his personality.

Myung Soo Jeong/Korea
he is so famous even in Japan, i heard.
also he was the one of the main member of this art festival since it had started.
he made ceramics on the Nobori-kiln, though,
this time, he looked not satisfied the result.
red color would be so important for his works.

isamu joseph yamazoe/Japan
he had been working in the hard twisting position in the middle of the mountain side behind the kiln with some pipes for Korean heater for floor which called "ondoru" he had found somehow...
though you would had seen his way of working was so strange, he recognised his visions next clearly.
i got so fresh feelings, maybe because artificial materials like pipes, and that natural sites' atmosphere
conbined, at the same time, repulsioned, some kind of rhythm occured naturally.

cab /Japan
i stiched korean papers on fishing lines among trees, and made something like a house
along a path. which looked like a kind of device people would be able to feel some natural feelings like sun shine, shades ,winds, and so on. time and human's atmosphere which was consist of, made a shape of a house.
though,,,it was destroied and all of them had gone by the heavy storm at the day before!!!
- :
and then, the festival day.
at this festival, the film festival were held at the same time of the ceremony of the national founding day, art performances and concerts. anyway it was quite more big festival than i had thought.

- :
the performances at the festival
the artists who would performance in the festival had come a few days before the festival.
from Japan, Atake-san/dancer, Ikeda-san/composer, and Ariga-san/trombonist had come around the day, too. they were getting used to the atmosphere to feel their performance at home.

30/performance by Atake,Ariga,Ikeda
poem reading by Ria, video by Andree

Dancer/Atake-san moved very sharply like shear into the air in a red dress.
sounds of trombone which Ariga-san played, poem-reading of Ri-A. i felt them like
the incidents inside Andree's images, her murmurs or impulses inside her own.
every media combined perfectly, and resonated so much.
this performance will be held in Andree's exhibition,
Jan12th from7:00pm at Pepper's Gallery. (ticket fee :1,000yen)
